Ethics is a very important thing in any job and especially in journalism. Ethics are principles that govern a person’s behavior. Showing ethics means that you take pride in what you do. You are fair, reliable, serious, and accountable in a serious situation. Many journalists around the world follow these guidelines on a daily basis. According to SPJ ethics in journalism is “Ethical journalism strives to ensure the free exchange of information that is accurate, fair and thorough. An ethical journalist acts with integrity.” Journalists must seek to write honest pieces with thorough reliable information.
Being honest and transparent as a journalist means being fair and clear of what one choses to write about. Many journalists seek the truth and report it. Truth and accuracy are highly very important things in journalism. People want reliable sources in which they can believe the story that they are reading or hearing on the TV. You may ask yourself so, how does a journalist seek reliable resources? The journalist may ask a person to say what they know and tell them that their identity will remain anonymous. Working with such sources who are sometimes initially reluctant to talk — involves building a relationship of trust that can lead to the truth. Journalists in the past have lied when reporting news, which have led to them being fired from their job. “Twenty-one journalists around the world are imprisoned under charges of “false news,” according to a new report by the Committee to Protect Journalists.” (Beiser, 2017) Examples like this shows that many reporters and journalists need to verify their news. Publishing wrong information can lead to horrible things.
Knowing the difference from right and wrong was taught to everyone since they were kids. So, when a journalist gets information from someone, they need to make sure what they are saying is true. “A reliable source is one that provides a thorough, well-reasoned theory, argument, discussion, etc. based on strong evidence. (UGA, 2018) Digging up information and making sure that the source is correct are some things a journalist must do. Honesty is the best policy I remember my English teacher telling me in 12th grade. So, writing honest stories is a main priority for journalists. Although, sometimes that may be hard as some people may accuse journalists for publicizing false news. Even the president of the United States has accused CNN journalists for reporting “false news.” By saying this, the president has caused many people to think twice before relying on what CNN says.
Ethics is important not just in journalism, but in life as well. It makes us a better human being and creates a positive vibe. Like my mother always tells me, “the truth always comes out.” Sometimes we may not get the truth but gaining facts can be another alternative to seek the truth.
